Hi Friends,

Did you make it through the Nor’easter OK? I hope your road closures were short, your wifi was stable, and all the dogs in your neighborhood enjoyed the widest selection of sticks. Maybe our collective prayers to Satan Central Hudson helped a little bit.

The start of October is looking stunning and there are so many ways to enjoy it that I’ve actually written a whole extra newsletter issue about it!! We could all use a little help planning these few precious autumn weekends. Our bartender at Pitanga North on Monday was also quaking in his Crocs about the onslaught of Homecoming Weekend/Parents’ Weekend/Alumni Weekend across the area’s colleges, so maybe you also need a little help avoiding that. I gotchu.

If you’re into it I may do more plan-ahead listings for the holiday season and beyond. But it’s up to you! By responding to the poll below you’ll be redirected to our list of October Festivals & Featured Events.

Here's a fun contradiction. I don't consider myself a "digging in the crates" guy. I've largely sworn off physical media, and I tend to focus on the newer side of music. It's easier for me to keep moving forward than to try to swim backward. In spite of this, I wrote my law school thesis on the copyright laws that govern sampling, arguing for a compulsory license that would drive equity for newer musicians and the legacy acts they borrow from. So I guess I'm an advocate for the crate diggers from the sidelines, and I'll be cheering from those same sidelines for legendary French psych-jazz band Cortex on Friday at The Egg in Albany.

Cortex formed in Paris in the mid-'70s and released a small handful of super progressive albums before breaking up in 1981. I know absolutely zero people who can claim to have been fans back then, because who was listening to French jazz prog in the '70s? Nevertheless, you have heard their stuff! They had a renaissance in the aughts after a bunch of hip-hop producers got hold of their reissues. Once Dilla and Madlib sample you, there's no turning back. You can hear little bits of Cortex on more than 200 records now.

Their tour is presented by Jazz Is Dead, the full-circle experiment from composer Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, A Tribe Called Quest's DJ. Their label records new work with jazz musicians who would not be household names but for those aforementioned crate diggers. They are doing the Lord's work. Adrian Younge usually tours with a full orchestra, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad has ceded DJ duties to OG turntablist J.Rocc for this tour. In essence, this is a show full of all the basic ingredients of hip-hop with none of the actual hip-hop. A crate digger's nirvana. I'll be there with my crate-digger buddies for emotional support. Say hi if you're coming through.
